Lifeguard & Training

Lifeguard Course

At the completion of our Lifeguarding Course, you’ll join a righteous league of aquatic heroes.

Lifeguard courses are $150.


Open to all ages 15 & older, however, lifeguards must be 16 years or older to work on Kadena.

  • You must successfully pass a pre-test given on the first day of class.
  • You must attend all class sessions for your chosen course.
  • You must pass a test at course completion to become certified.

Prerequisites include:

  • 300-meter swim (freestyle, or breaststroke)
  • 2-minute tread water without hands
  • Brick test under 1 minute 30 seconds

Swim Test

Children ages 10 and younger must be under the direct supervision of an adult at all times. Children ages 11 – 13 may be left unattended only if they pass the swim test, otherwise must be supervised by an adult who is at least 18 years old. Children must have dependent ID on their person at all times. In order to pass the swim test the child must successfully complete the following:

  • Swim at least 25 meters
  • Tread water for 1 minute
  • Pull themselves up from the water without using a ladder

Rental Fees:

$150 • Two hours (Up to 50 people)
$225 • Three hours (Up to 50 people)

Reservations must be made at least five business days prior but no more than 30 days in advance at Outdoor Recreation, Building 614.

Swim Evaluations

If you are unsure about your child’s swimming ability, check out our FREE swim lesson evaluations! This will measure what swim lesson level your child should participate in.


Kadena Aquatics swim lesson program follows the American Red Cross progressive swimming level model.

Swim Lessons (Based on age and ability)

Parent & Child (Ages 6 mos – 2 yrs)

  • $50 • Per series
  • Children are introduced into the water in a comfortable environment and parents are taught the basics of water safety with the purpose of gaining a better understanding and confidence in the water.
  • Parents must be in the water with their child at all times.

Preschool (ages 3 yrs - 5 yrs)

  • $75 • Per series
  • Children are introduced to important safety practices and basic aquatic skills while developing confidence in the water.

Learn to Swim Series Levels 1 – 6 (Ages 5 yrs - 17 yrs)

  • $75 • Per series • Ages 5 & over
  • Children are introduced to important safety practices and basic aquatic skills while developing confidence in the water.
  • Learn to Swim Levels:
    1. Introduction to water skills
      • This class is designed to help the student develop positive attitudes, good swimming habits, and safe practices in and around the water.
    2. Fundamental aquatics skills
      • This class is designed to give students success with fundamental skills, including learning how to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. Level 1 must be passed in order to register for this class.
    3. Stroke development
      • This class is designed to help students build on the skills learned in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice in deeper water. Level 2 must be passed in order to register for this class.
    4. Stroke improvement
      • This class is designed to develop students’ confidence in the strokes learned in Level 3 and to improve other aquatic skills. Level 3 must be passed in order to register for this class.
    5. Stroke refinement
      • This class is designed for students to further learn how to coordinate and refine strokes. Level 4 must be passed in order to register for this class.
    6. Swimming and skill proficiency
      • This class is designed for students to refine strokes, allowing them to swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.

Private Lessons (Ages 6 & over - available all year round)

  • $125 • Per series
  • Learn the skills and safety precautions necessary to become a swimmer! Small class sizes allow for ample instruction, practice, and development.

Summer Sessions

Mondays through Thursdays (Friday is a make-up day in cases of inclement weather or a class reschedule).

Times and dates to be determined. Based on lifeguards, instructors, weather, and availability of pool. Not every month is guaranteed.

Non-Summer Sessions

Tuesdays & Thursdays

  • All Month Long (2nd and 4th Fridays are make-up days in cases of inclement weather or a class reschedule).
  • Lessons are open to ages 6 mos & over
  • Each series consists of eight 30-minute sessions. Open to all SOFA and dependents.
